Thermal infra-red, false-colour infra-red, multispectral thematic mapper and aerial photography are used for a variety of environmental monitoring applications including; methane 'hot spot' mapping on decommissioned landfills, thermal pollution of water bodies, groundwater seepage, vegetation stress identification and general landuse classification. Digital elevation models can be produced from stereo pairs for terrain visualisation in 3D and volumetric calculations.
Remote sensing is also widely used in mineral exploration as an aid to mapping geological structure, lithology, and weathering / vegetation stress phenomena possibly associated with surface shows of mineralisation.
Data is sourced from a variety of original satellite and airborne platforms including but not limited to; Thematic Mapper, SPOT, ERS-1, AVHRR, HCMM, thermal infra-red linescanners etc..
